Masculine Cards for Level 3 Final of Altenew Educator Program
Hi, everyone! These masculine cards are part of a final project for the Altenew Educator Certification Program. I held a 2 hr live workshop with 11 people in attendance teaching about these cards. It was so good to see faces from all over the world and to experience the legendary support of our crafting community! We worked hard for the entire time and many of the class participants sent pictures to display what they learned in the class (see the gallery at the end of the post).
Masculine cards have always been a passion of mine. I have 2 boys and a husband that are very particular and have helped shape the way that I design masculine cards. Bold colors, texture, geometrical designs and custom sentiments are my favorite way to create these cards.
I chose the Altenew educator program because of my love of the Altenew products and community. It has always been a goal of mine to join all the wonderful designers at Altenew and this is the first big step. So, let’s get into the designs. I will be creating videos on my YouTube channel on all these cards. The first of this series is live now and I will list the link under the card explanation.
Card #1 Masculine Sympathy Card
Techniques: stencils, embossing paste, coloring embossing paste, heat embossing
Start with gray card stock cut to 4 x 5.25in
Use the Illusions Hexagons Stencil
Get a small bowl to mix embossing paste
Add embossing paste to the bowl (about half dollar amount)
Add gray denim re-inker drops until light gray color
Apply this light gray to the top 3rd of the stencil
Once satisfied with light gray application, add more re-inker to the mix
When medium gray achieved, apply this color to the middle third of the stencil
Once this is applied, add more of the re-inker to the mix to create your darkest color
Add the darkest color to the bottom 3rd of the card
Set this aside to dry for at least 1 hour
While you are waiting on the drying, you can compose the sentiment. I mixed 2 different stamps sets for this “Note for You” and “Grape Leaves” stamp sets
Set up the sentiment in a stamp positioner
Add antistatic powder and stamp with Versamark ink
Use Antique Silver embossing powder to complete the sentiment
Cut this sentiment into a rectangle (2 1/4 x 1 3/8in)
Add Metallic thread in silver around the card base
Add foam tape under the rectangle sentiment
Place the sentiment in center over the metallic thread
Back this card with jet black card stock 4.25 x 5.5
Card #2 Hey Dude Card
Techniques: Layered stencils, embossing paste, ink blending, die cutting
This is my favorite of the cards. I love the bold look! Check the end of the post for the YouTube video on this card.
Start with Bristol Smooth cut to 4.0 x 5.25
Tear 2 equal strips of masking paper
Apply the masking paper and put down the Color Block Triangle stencil
Ink blend with spotlight effect using Desert Night Ink
Leave the stencil in place and add the Classy Stripes stencil over it
The classy stripes layer is embossing paste mixed with Gray Denim re- inker
After the embossing paste is applied, carefully remove the stencils and the masking paper.
Once dry, die cut 2 of each letter from navy card stock and 2 “hey” from navy card stock
Next die cut 1 set of “hey” and letters “DUDE” from silver card stock Layer the letter to give a silver shadow effect
Glue the letters to the card
Add backing of navy (4.25 x 5.5) to finish off this card

Card #3 Geometric Clean And Simple
Techniques: clean and simple, adding texture, stamping
Start with 4 x 5.25 white card base
Use Altenew Crisp Dye Inks in Desert Night, Dusk, Snapdragon, Marigold and Fresh Leaf
Get solid large triangle from the Socahtoa Stamp Set and start stamping
Make sure to start with the large triangle – I put 2 of those in this arrangement, Marigold and Dusk
Use Masking tape or level to keep all the stamping straight, if there is a little overlap the sentiment will cover it
Next stamp 3 mid-sized triangles in Desert Night, Fresh Leaf and Snapdragon
Last stamp the smallest triangle in Fresh Leaf and Snapdragon
Next, use the Label Love Stamp set to stamp the sentiment with black ink
Cut this Sentiment out with a paper trimmer leaving no white on the edges
Get some black thread (mine is DMC black floss) and add swirls behind the sentiment to give some texture to the design
Add a strip of foam tape to the back of the sentiment and place in the middle of the design
Last back the white card with Autumn Blaze 4.25 x 5.5
Card #4 Embossed Birthday Card
Techniques: embossing with Stencil, embossing folders, heat embossing
Start with Navy card stock cut to 4 x 5.25
Place the Color Block stencil over the navy card stock and run through your cutting machine with embossing plates
Next, take a strip of metallic silver paper and put it in the Angled Mosiac embossing folder
Cut this strip to 1.5 x 4 in
Affix this to the embossed navy card stock with adhesive
Next, use Antique Silver Crisp embossing powder to heat emboss the sentiment onto navy card stock.
Cut this into a square 2 1/8in. Backer to the sentiment 2 3/8 in (orange)
Last, use a different color card stock to back the sentiment and the card base. I used Autumn Blaze to do this. Card base 4.25 x 5.5
